Just back from Carnegie Hall - maybe you heard the
Berlin Philharmonic perform the Gran Partita tonight
on the radio (NPR). It was very nicely done: tasteful
ornamentation and eingaenge, proper omission of the
measure leading into the coda of the Romance, double
bass used as it should be, nice short appogiaturas.
Very crisp.

Here's an excerpt from the program notes by Robert
Gutman: "the score calls for 13 instruments - the
octet of the Harmonie along with an extra pair of
horns and two alto clarinets (Mozart's first use of
these so-called basset horns)..."

Score one for Leblanc players!

The fine clarinet players were; Wenzel Fuchs & Walter
Seyfarth (soprano clarinets); Manfred Preis &
Alexander Bader (alto clarinets or so-called basset horns)
