As far as I know he played the Viola. He is supposed to have relished
playing Viola in chamber music a lot. Apparently his instrument is even
extant, I once had a record of the Kegelstadt 3o that claimed the Viola
player on it used it. The playing was horrible and I gave the record away. I
don't recall the players, only a Swiss man with a ridiculous beard was
playing a piece of boxwood that was supposed to be a clarinet and some very
stiff honky tonk on an alleged original 1790 something Viennese
Hammerfluegel.
BTW: Have you heard the Charles Neidich recording? Even though this is not
in fact a Viennese instrument like Stadler would have played but a Grenser
copy by Tutz, I think it beats all other recordings I have heard so far.
Best wishes,
danyel
