Subj: [kl] Music for Mozart's birthday
Date: Fri, 27 Jan 2006 12:49:30 -0500

So on Wednesday night I heard Sabine Meyer and the
Tokyo Quartet play the Mozart. Very interesting for a
number of reasons, but I will mention only a few.
First, the experience was heavenly. I love listening
to live music. I am used to recorded music. Live
music is 100 times a better experience. (Preaching to
the choir, I'm sure.)

Perhaps I've never heard a German clarinet live
before. Fascinating and lovely.

I listened to her ornamentation. How instructive.
She did ornaments not at every opportunity, only a
few. A turn here, a grace note there, and a little
run into a repeat of the minuet melody. I thought the
effect refreshing and fun. I'm glad for the
discussions of ornamentation here; I begin to
understand how I might use ornaments. Oh, and I
recognized her Eingang to the resolution at end of the
slow part in the Finale. When I played this piece in
college 30 years ago, I remember the professor
encouraging me to hang on that note, to take my time.
Such a long time ago, I barely understood what he was
getting at.

PS On the radio recently here in Southern California,
I have heard an interview with Jeffrey Kahane where he
discusses Cadenzas and Eingange in Mozart Concerti.
And he gave examples of simple and slightly more
elaborate Eingange.
