It is a very different sound. The contrast between basset horn and clarinet
is used throughout. And there are numerous places where the basset horn 2 is
the bass and it sounds odd an octave higher - remember that the basset horn
goes to the F at the bottom of the bass clef. So in my book, yes it is a
huge compromise, but then I am a basset horn player and this is my favourite
work of all time! Given that, I have played basset parts on clarinet when I
didn't have one, and it is still a great piece of music. People who don't
know it won't know what they are missing.

If on basset horns, my part of choice is basset 1, mainly for the incredible
Adagio and the embellishment possibilities therein, but it is wonderful
througout. When I played it with Dan, he chose basset 2 for most of the work
as he likes the low life. But "the Adagio is mine!" he said, and I just
listened in awe to what he did with it. But clarinet 1 is a fine part, with
all the eingange recently discussed, which are such fun (save Dan's emails
and study them!). I would prefer to play clarinet 1 to clarinet 3 and put
the second best player on clarinet 3.

Where are you doing it? I'm on holiday with basset horn in the USA from the
end of next week, in Denver and then Santa Fe ... If anywhere within reach
I'll come and play basset horn for you for free!

Dan's Barenreiter edition is terrific. We (Kammermusik) are doing it in
workshop next month (Feb 18-20) from this edition along with the octets K
388 and 375 under the direction of David Whitwell (at Dan's recommendation).

We are actually short of one or possibly two clarinets for the octet group
because of dropouts of our regular players. The octet group players will
swap over to play the GP in one session so everyone will get a crack at it.
The idea is to play and learn about Mozart rather than to give an amazing
performance - there will just be a concert to ourselves and friends at the
end of the weekend. If anyone is interested please check out the web site
and either fill in the registration form or email me for questions. No
basset horn vacancies, but you do get to admire and maybe blow two Steve Fox
instruments!
