Dear List,

From what Mr. Abato can tell me, LeBlanc engaged Johnny Richards in
the mid 1950s to write a piece featuring Mr. Abato on clarinet. The
resulting piece, "Annotations of a Muse", ended up being written for
woodwind quintet, trumpet, bass, jazz guitar and percussion and was
released on the Legende label as Legende Records LP 1401. The
personnel on the date included:

Joe Wilder, trumpet
John Barrows, French horn
Vincent Abato, clarinet
Julius Baker, Flute
Bob Bloom, oboe
Harold Goltzer, bassoon
Johnny Smith, guitar
Jack Lesberg, bass
Sol Gubin, drums, tympani

Again according to Mr. Abato, this album was given away as
promotional material with the sale of LeBlanc clarinets and therefore
likely never sold on the general market. As such, this album has been
horribly difficult for me to track down. One copy is selling as item
number 4810884370 on eBay for $160 (for those with deeper pockets
than myself!)

Luckily, Mosaic records has recently remastered the material on CD
for the following release:

I just received my copy yesterday and have to say it is the best
recorded example of Mr. Abato's clarinet playing I have heard with
the exception of the Tchaikovsky (which, sigh, will be out
RealSoonNow). The other players aren't slouches, either!

This is a limited set of 5000, but my copy is marked Set No. 0959, so
I imagine there's no need to rush at this point.
