The Tchaikovsky Foundation edition, copyright 1954, is 37 pages for the 1st Clarinet. That is the
edition we use for the George Balanchine production at the New York City Ballet. It has a violin
solo, originally from 'The Sleeping Beauty,' interpolated plus a few cuts, including the entire
Tarantella.
I'm in my 19th season at NYCB and have probably played 'The Nutcracker' close to 800 times,
including various other productions during my career. I have to say this in 'The Nutcracker's
favor: it is a masterpiece, it is short (under 2 hours) and it is still challenging. The fact that
it is enormously popular with the public and therefore a 'cash cow' for many ballet companies is
another plus.
With due respect (and tongue in cheek) may I say to Mr. Leeson: I doubt that you would have the
same opinion of 'The Nutcracker' if it had a prominent basset horn part!

Happy Holidays to all.
