I have been in possession of a new Morales/Backun mouthpiece made of
beautiful cocobolo (I think) wood for the last four days. It plays
beautifully in every respect and allows me to do technical things that I
have been unable to do thus far in my clarinet life. I can play all the
way up to C above high C at pitch with no difficulty at all, make wide
interval leaps up or down with no difficulty and at considerable speed to
boot, get my A at the top of the staff to speak without squeaking (every
single time ), play from one end of my range to the other without having to
compensate for minor pitch inconsistencies ( this alone makes the
mouthpiece a gem to me), play with nice clean articulation from the top to
the bottom of my range and a host of things that I haven't even discovered
yet. All the crap in the beginning of Pineapple Poll is much more
manageable now and can be played at tempo with no difficulty. I wonder if
Mid-summer Night's Dream will be any easier. I'm beginning to think that
if I just wait long enough, Morrie will design a fix for all that ails the
French model clarinets. I am now hoping Morrie and his elves will make
some wooden e-flat mouthpieces that play just like my new Bb one.
