I remember very clearly my elation when this product was first
introduced. I had no doubt that it was at least pointing the way
toward the future but on the other hand it used a magneto-optical
disk format which would have had to become some kind of standard if
it was really going to take off.

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong here) that when it was introduced,
cheap CD-Rs and CD-RWs were still off in the future. Since then,
dropping prices, increasing reliability of these two products and WAV
files and their compact sisters, MD3s, never mind the onslaught of
DVD writers and accompanying cheap DVD-R disks have marginalized the
MD format. Add to that the impossibility (again, correct me here if
I'm wrong) of copying an MD file to a PC or Mac (and editing and
converting it to another format) and one has a fine product badly
sidelined in a rapidly developing technology.

I have more than my share of bad experiences trying to write to CD-Rs
and CD-RWs, and more than a few of these disks which I thought had
good files on them only to discover they are corrupted, so who knows,
maybe the MD format is the superior one but has been pushed to the
side like Betamax was by VHS video.

I'd be interested in others' views and memories about this
revolutionary product.
