I've played shows where soprano is called for, e.g. Annie,
and often when playing for dinner theatre with a reduced pit, the
MD will rearrange things and I end up playing English Horn or
Oboe parts on soprano sax. But, that said, I wouldn't play
clarinet parts on soprano. On the other hand, a guy I often
work with plays saxes far better than clarinet and he is known
to grab a soprano sax when the clarinet part is too much for
him. So far the conductors haven't thrown any batons or even
dirty looks at him.
