Well, I certainly did not expect my request to be controversial, and
especially not my use of the word "folks". In my mind, that was simply
an informal way of saying "attention good people of the klarinet list,"
or "to whom it may concern." I'm still not sure I see the "patronizing"
connotation.

The top-post vs bottom-post debate has generated more heat than light
over the past few years, and I was not attempting to pass judgement on
the goodness of either approach, although I certainly have my own
opinion. And, indeed, if you have been participating in mailing lists
and newsgroups for a number of years, you have probably chosen one
approach and justified it thoroughly to yourself. I'm not going to
change your mind. But when someone is just starting out, I do not think
there is anything wrong in pointing out that there is an issue, and why
it is an issue. I will accept the epithet "Internet police."
