Balance. It's easy for an eepher to overpower others in tutti passages -
not everything one plays is a solo for the little guy, esp. in a wind
ensemble setting. The extension makes it a bit easier to play well with
others. Amongst other things, the 12ths seem a bit easier to play in tune
with the folks around me.
As I said before, "made it easier to play with flutes & oboes and not have
them scowl so much."

R13, purchased new in 1991. I use either a Greg Smith or Dan Johnston
mouthpiece, cut-down V12 3-1/2 Bb reeds, and a ligature.
