Rob,
As a sax doubler and teacher, I have found that to a non-clarinetist
beginner there is no difference in difficulty. However, to a
clarinetist, the alto will feel more comfortable, both in size and in
embouchure. Cost is also a consideration. Because they are bigger,
Tenors cost more than Altos, as do the reeds, mouthpieces, etc. And
finally, there are more books of (student-level) repertoire for alto.
