The newest generation (the Hi-MD units) of Minidisc allows recording in
linear PCM - it's uncompressed, full CD standard. Unfortunately, Sony's
proprietary upload system is a bit of a hassle.

My recommendation these days for a portable recorder for personal use is the
m-audio MicroTrack. It's about the size of a pack of cigarettes, and records
to compact flash cards.
