The donut hole functions like the full boehm system in that it allows Eb/Bb
to be played with the index and ring fingers of the left hand, except that
in this case it is constructed like a flute open hole key. The ring finger
hole has a ring key which closes the Eb/Bb hole normally operated by the
middle finger, so that the 'donut' key opens when the middle finger is
lifted on its own. The donut key also closes the Eb/Bb hole through an
adjusting screw on a tab, similarly to mechanisms on flutes, and thus D/A
operates normally.
By the way, Hendy, I would be interested to know how long your barrel is, as
the one supplied with my clarinet has been severely shortened by a previous
owner.
Cheers,
Geoff.
