But the point of the original post was to find music appropriate to an adult
player who is *not at* a virtuosic level and has, no doubt, a somewhat
limited expressive range. He's just finishing Rubank Elementary. I'm
actually a little surprised that Sarah thought the Mendelssohn Sonata was
the right level for such a student, but Kevin Fay (who wrote the original
post) would know better about the student's true level than we. I'm not
going to program the Mendelssohn anytime soon (or even not soon) in any
concert I perform, because I share your opinion of it as a piece of concert
music for a capable player or even an advanced student, but I'm not sure
it's such a travesty to use it with a less accomplished student. It does
contain material that can be useful for teaching about form and Romantic
style, and, while not mature recital material, it isn't entirely unmusical.
