There's limited value in trying to describe a concert. Words and music
are different languages and they cannot describe each other.

Someone posted that the ensemble would probably "blow the roof off the
joint". It's true that much (not all) of the music was rousing and up
tempo, but boisterousness and loudness were not what the performance was
about.

People who haven't played a reed instrument probably didn't appreciate
the variety of colors that Papasov produced. The saxophonist played
well, but was much more "uni-dimensional" than Papasov was. The
audience tried to clap and to keep pace with the complex rhythms, but
for the most part, they couldn't succeed. I was no exception. I
found myself falling back to simple rhythms, which every so often would
slip out of phase and I'd wonder where I had lost it.

The drummer was special. The electric bass guitarist had a thankless
job (no solo), but he was essential to the performance. One of his
strings broke in the middle of a melody, and he re-tuned another string
and continued playing without a glitch. The lady, a professor who
explained bits of Romani and Bulgarian history, danced in a reserved
manner which hinted at much wilder things left unspoken. Her voice was
beautiful.

They were selling a CD in the lobby. I've only listened to one track
so far, but it doesn't (so far) give a true picture of their performance
tonight. If any of you have the opportunity to attend a performance, I
recommend them.
