I do send you most sincere wishes and hope for a complete and a
(relatively) pain-free recovery!

I've been fighting hand problems, as well, that have finally been
diagnosed as, I think, bilateral carpal and caudal tunnel syndrome.
I, little by little, reached the point where I couldn't play the Bb,
at all, and was shifted off to the bass. I've had the surgery on
the right hand/arm last week and hope (after they fix the left)
to go back to my clarinets.

Mainly, I suggest that you do >exactly< what your doctor tells
you, and then, eventually, >exactly< what your therapist tells
you. Especially the therapist. It will be painful and frustrating,
at first, but you will, I hope, be rewarded with the return of your
technique. (You might even get to go back to ice skating. <g>)
