I've been technical writer for almost two decades now, and some years ago I
actually inserted a mispelling of a common word, "adn" instead of "and," in
the resume that I distribute when I get a nibble for a contract job.

Most interviewers miss it, of course. Some who find it reject me at the
outset, and I never hear from them. but those who notice it and bring it to
my attention come in two flavors: those who make a big deal about it, and
those who don't.

Those who make a big deal about a typo or an inadvertent misspelling
typically equate good writing with perfect mechanics, not the clarity of the
writing or the optimum choice and arrangement of information. Those who
understand what really matters in information development will ask me about
it, and I'll tell them about the trap I've set. If they take it well (and
all have so far), I can be fairly sure that they're more concerned with high
quality work than counting beans.

I've almost always gotten a contract from those who know what matters most.
The ones who don't, I'd rather not work for anyway.

Cheers.
