HA! So, Dan, you admit *you've* done this! :-) My conductor thinks
that Tchaikovsky scored it for bassoon to avoid requiring an otherwise
unemployed BBb clarinet, but I admit that, as far as I know, my
conductor never spoke with the man...

In our case, we're a community orchestra, so there's not really a
contract problem - just one of putting on a tux for 5 notes unless the
conductor persuades the guy who normally plays 2nd to let me have the
rest of the number on the soprano parts or perhaps (as is not out of
the question), to let me play the 2nd part for the whole program (I
sub on 2nd sometimes anyway).
