On an "Unofficial website"(http://www.parnasse.com/vpo.shtml) I found:

(The Vienna Staatsoper/Vienna Philharmonic performs approximately 300
operas per year, and 80 symphony concerts. The orchestra has 149
members who divide the work. Women are allowed to play in the
Staatsoper, but only men are allowed to play in the elite
Philharmonic. The Philharmonic believes women take too much sick
leave.)

That settles that, obviously just a sick leave issue.
