Hi Ed,
I've been having a similar problem playing with several big bands, some requiring great volume and edge. I have also been working with a Pops orchestra, which requires blending with strings and woodwinds. I find that the mouthpieces that were popular as jazz mpcs. in the late 1940,s and 50.s such as the Brilharts, MC Gregories and the old selmers (the ones with the long shank) blend well in most situations, I've been using Rico Jazz select Unfiled reeds 3M with mouthpieces about as open as a Selmer C** for jazz and classical situations.
