But somewhere in this discussion, there is the question of whether a
performer is actually performing, or merely flipping switches in the
same manner as pet cat could be trained to do?

This is why I don't disparage electronic music so long as a person is
'using his/her tools' in order to create a particular effect. Whether
the tools are acoustic or electronic or bth doesn't bother me, and often
I think that people who disparage 'electronic tools' are wearing
blinders and missing out on a worthwhile art form.
