Mostly bore size. The Selmer 1400 has a cylindrical, .590" bore and
straight tone holes. The 1401's polycylindrical bore is .577", with
undercut tone holes. The CL300 has a smaller polycylindrical bore still,
but I can't recall exactly what the measurement is offhand (.573?). Large
bores tend to be favored by jazz players for big sound and pitch
flexibility (for example, the Selmer Balanced Tone, Centered Tone, and
Series 9). Smaller bore are becoming more common in student instruments
lately. Perhaps they are easier for beginners to control pitch with.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
