I assume you had a long time not playing the clarinet then? How long was
it?

This is ridiculous. Of course you can do it. It is that simple and you
making it complicated.

Returning to the clarinet it isn't always as easy as you make it sound
Dan. I theory I agree, but life isn't that simple.

Since have some experience playing clarinet, I presume you have tried
both instruments. What do you think? The B&H is a nice instrument, and
so is the Yamaha. But I would hope that your decisison is based on
which one you prefer as a working instrument. What about the intonation
of both clarinets? Have you tried them both with a good mouthpiece and
a reed that doesn't kill you?

Make the decision yourself based on how you like one vs the other.

Subject: [kl] Boosey or Yamaha

Hello folks,

I'm getting back into playing the clarinet after a
long (10-12yr) hiatus, and am trying to select an
instrument. I should also mention that my 9 yr old
son is starting to play, so he would be using the
instrument as well. However, he is a careful kid
and I'm not concerned about him damaging it.

My local music store, whom I trust, has two used
instruments I am interested in, and I'm looking
for help picking one.

The first is a relatively new Yamaha YCL26II in
good shape. It was a rental return, no surprises here.

The second is a Boosey & Hawkes. The store owner
is guessing it's about 20yrs old. Before the
Boosey on the horn, there appears to be some other
letters, maybe 'CL', but it's hard to read. It
looks to be in good shape. The horn has been
cracked, but he says he got it professionally
repaired.

The quandary is that he's asking the same price
for these two Clarinets!

So, what should I do? I'm leaning towards the B&H.
I know it would require more maintenance. Would it
be a more difficult instrument for my son to play?

Any advice is appreciated!
Tx,
Ashley
