Dave,

This is different from the theory that every instrument is "blown out"
and should be routinely replaced every ___ (3 - 5 - 7 - fill in the
blank) years because it's playing characteristics are irretrievably
compromised by inevitable deteriorations of the wood and mechanism. Of
course, a clarinet (or anything else) can deteriorate. Wood can warp or
change dimensions in some other way, keywork can become less efficient
over time, etc. The difference is over whether or not those changes are
truly inevitable and whether or not changes that occur can be reversed
or corrected by competent repair people.
