It happened that tonight I heard the National Symphony Orchestra
(Leonard Slatkin). During intermission, I asked the violin soloist
(Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1) what they had tuned to tonight. He
replied: "I tune to whatever they give me and therefore I don't know for
sure about tonight, but usually it's 442." (The program says that the
violinist is European --- he began his career in Denmark, and has had a
Russian mentor in Vienna for the last 10 years).

Because of the recent discussion, I had brought my tuner to the concert.
I tried to make a precise measurement but I failed because of audience
noise, my tuner's slow response, and weak lighting which prevented me
from reading the needle precisely. However, with the tuner set to
a=440 (and agreeing with the 440 tone from another tuner), the needle
was always on the sharp side of zero when the orchestra tuned.
