Subj: [kl] CD Review - Vinny Golia: Music for Like Instruments: The Clarinets
Date: Wed, 12 Oct 2005 03:45:24 -0400

If clarinet enthusiasts are interested in hearing most of the clarinet
family (no D or C clarinets, high G clarinet or basset horn but
including the low G clarinet) on a single CD they might well try the new
CD by Vinny Golia on Ninewinds (NWCD0279) Music for Like Instruments:
The Clarinets (part of a series which hass already included the flutes
and the Eb saxophones - Bb to follow)
In a contemporary but not avant-garde jazz style the CD gets off to a
great start by featuring a solo on Ab clarinet.
Using various combinations of instruments played by himself with four
others there should be plenty to attract listeners (there is even a duet
for G clarinet and tarogato - and Vinny Golia knows that the latter is
not a clarinet, he just likes to play it occasionally).
With plenty of bass, contraalto and contrabass the playing is excellent
and the recording quality very good. While not quite a choir or even a
sextet, there is enough variety of sound for the former.
The music is interesting and should have appeal to most listeners.
Worth investigating and highly recommended.
