Hi everyone.
One understanding of mouthpiece materials making a difference to the sound
has to do with the resilience of the material. Bearing in mind that when the
reed vibrates it is not only being affected by the resonances of the bore,
but because it is continually hitting the surface of the facing of the
mouthpiece, there is, to some degree, a difference in the way it responds:
the more resilient the material, the less energy is absorbed, or conversely,
the more resilient the material, the more strongly it throws the reed back
after the compression of the reed against the facing. (It may be worth a
reread of Benade's 'Fundamentals of Musical Acoustics' with respect to the
clipping of the vibration curve at certain times during playing.)

This is, of course, an entirely different matter from how the bore and what
it is made from reacts with the standing wave inside the instrument.

Regards,
Geoff Secomb.
