It is indeed usually played on alto recorders, and was even probably
written with them in mind. However, it being baroque, I'll bet he
wouldn't have minded using any instrument which had the range. I'm sure
that many people DID play it with transverse flutes even in his day. If
you are a purist, use the recorder. (and hire me! ;-) )
