Boy, am I glad I haven't been following this stupid strand. But now that
I've read a few I am moved to sarcastic rejoinder.

I must point out here that you have demonstrated if you will that what are
defined as "left" and "right" in European politics tend to both be, by the
standards of sane individuals, somewhere politically to the left of Che
Guevera or Alger Hiss. In seriousness, there is more political diversity in
America than anywhere else in the West. You may not like the position of
the spectrum but it's range is great nonetheless. Mark Steyn hilariously
examines the "center-right" movement in Europe and the voters' inability to
inact change here http://www.nationalreview.com/issue/steyn200509190841.asp

Of course, because Duh, a massive bloated pampered welfare state is the
only historically-vindicated and economically-sustainable way to organize a
society. Why haven't I realized this before? Nevermind the litany of failed
states and human misery, the economic stagnation, the penury of healthcare
and double-digit unemployment, the pitiful rate of development in all
things, the pathetic class of self-selected beaurocrats as they try to
salvage their plan; I will not go on to detail what I observe to be the
decline of liberal democracy in Europe or, why, happily, I think Statism is
breathing its last foul breaths and is fast collapsing. It is too far
afield and anyway is clearly a result of a disease I have, one of the
symptoms of which causes an irrantional support for free and liberal
markets. No matter, since soon my Republican overloards will succeed in
raping the enviroment and allowing climate change to cause more hurricanes
which will destroy us all, most of all those selfish AARP members, who will
all be cast out cold wet and starving to die in the streets, with no
perscription drug benefit. (Because there haven't ever been any hurricanes
before! This is the "mounting evidence" earlier alluded to: is it too hot?
Too cold? Too wet? Too dry? Too normal? It's that global warming again!)
But wait, hasn't Bush taken us closer to worshipping at the alter of
Universal Healthcare than anyone since First Lady Clinton? That's why this
evil cabal, the Republican Study Committee, which is really a front for
Halliburton, is needed, when our Glorious Leader strays too close to
Nanny-government. This sordid group of neo-con Lakud pary members is
working hard to bring about the above goals; but first they must dismantle
PBS and the NEA, those great bulwarks against barbarism, which provide and
perpetuate Antiques Roadshow, Smart Gardening, stateside broadcast of
EastEnders; and Bill Moyers, Charlie Rose, and of course all the
trangressive Artists who have given us sado-masochistic feces-painting; all
of which are required for the operation of a free and open society. Well,
Bravo to them!, I say.

Let's try and concentrate real hard (I know it's hard!) and live up to that
High Ideal of Gentlemany Discussion Within Limits, where one's owm opinions
and thoughts on impertinent subjects are not interjected into this
listserv, which has united us for the discussion of the clarinet, music,
and even art in general. This is no place for dilletantist political
thought.

As to the snide comment about the U.S. service bands: that is an entirely
military-issue done for public outreach and troop morale. No comparison can
be made between that and objections to the NEA, either to it's actual
practice or even the basic idea behind it.

If you please I would like to return to my previous practice of ignoring
all of the Dumb Discussion and enjoying the real nuggets of knowledge and
wisdom I sometimes find here.
