You know, it is interesting that you should say that about me
condoning or not condoning this arrangements. I admit that when
I was younger, I would have issued a broadside against such
laisse-majesty. But as I get older, I get a little bit more
tolerant. The question is should the work only be heard in its
original format with the option that not to do that means no
performance at all, and thus limited exposure of the piece to
those who might enjoy it?

But make no mistake. This is a slippery slope, and the next step
down is the Beethoven 9th for brass quintet and four rock
singers. I am not wise enough to know where to put the brakes on
this kind of activity, but at least I am willing to consider it
at age 73. At age 30, I never would have.

I'm getting smarter. But there will be some recommendations that
would cause me to bite your asses off.

Could this have been the Rumbottom arrangement? If so, it was
for
clarinets in A (vide orig.) with optional ensemble parts for the
Bb
instruments - only Dan has a bass clarinet in A, and he wouldn't
condone
this arrangement, anyway.
