Subj: [kl] romantic/early 20th clarinet/piano recommendations?
Date: Tue, 27 Sep 2005 08:14:42 -0400

know this kind of message bobs up periodically, but at the risk of
taking the "concerto of the month club" approach, I want to ask for
some recommendations based on "If you like x, you'll like y" kind of
thinking. :-)

I'm looking for clarinet/piano pieces (reductions are worth
considering, too, although they're kind of second choice). I tend to
like late Romantic/early 20th century pieces.

My all-time favorites that I've worked on already, in no particular order, =
are:

5 Bagatelles - Finzi
Fantasy Pieces Op. 73- Schumann
Solo de Concours - Messager
Sonata Op. 167 - C. Saint-Saens
the Brahms sonatas - (unfortunately, I can play them, but the pianist
I'm currently working with can't)

of course, this isn't everything I've ever played, but these are to
give you an idea of my tastes. I also like the Cavallini/Weber/Rossini
school, to a certain extent, but find them rather wearing technically
and not as musically mature - maybe one to a recital as a light piece
(and then just take my lips and throw them in the nearest waste
receptacle, where my lungs have already landed). In another direction,
I have also enjoyed the Hindemith and the Bernstein sonatas, but again
find a steady diet of this sort of thing wearing, and find that pieces
like this take me as far in the direction of modernism as I want to
go.

Of course, I also love Mozart and the rest of what little true
"classical" repertoire there is for this instrument, but I'm mainly
looking for suggestions from the mid 1800s on, as I feel I know about
most of the early repertoire already.

Feel free to flame me for my musical tastes (those so inclined will
need no invitation, I'm sure) - just send your suggestions along with
it!
