Bart,
I use a regular old eefer mpc myself - a Selmer. One of their recent
series with two numbers. I love it because it gives great control
without sacrificing that brightness.
Anyway, I've come to the conclusion that using a mouthpiece altered to
take regular width reeds produces a sound which is 'too pretty'. Now
isn't that an odd statement! What I mean is that eefers have a
characteristic sound that is thin and often shrill. Composers LIKE that
effect and want to hear it in their music. Do you honestly think
Strauss wanted a sweet, mellow eefer in Til Eulenspiegel? There's a
reason that Berlioz used the eefer and not an oboe for the 'witch's
sabbath'. There is a fellow here in the North Carolina Symphony who
uses Bb reeds, etc. He sounds beautiful - too beautiful. It just ain't
fittin' for an eefer! Try out other 'standard' eefer mouthpieces. I
actually made a special trip to Weiner Music in NY because they have
lots to choose from.
