Rien,

Since you mention printing, I'll assume you're using "page mode." Since
you're trying to optimize, I'll assume you're working on a score with
one system per page and the problem is with the spacing between the
staves. As Joseph Wakeling suggested, clicking "Undo" in the Edit menu
until the problems have all undone themselves should work if you haven't
saved and closed the file yet. Another possibility is to find a backup
file - by default Finale saves a backup automatically when you re-save a
file unless you've turned the feature off. It would be a file with the
same name as the one you're working on but with a .bak extension,
probably in the same directory as the original file.

If neither of these works or if the backup you find is missing too much
(you had changed too much during the last session before the
"unfortunate events" took place), try this and let us know if it solves
the problem:
- Open the file (if it isn't still open)
-Click the Staff tool in the Finale toolbar (the treble clef)
-Click Staff that now appears in the Windows toolbar above it
-Click Respace Staves... in the dropdown menu
-In the dialog box that opens accept the defaults for Top Staff Position
(Set to 0) and Distance between staves (Set to -1.11111). These values
should restore the original spacing. From there, now that you know where
the dialog is, you can experiment with other spacings.

Of course (quickest and dirtiest saved until last), you can also drag
the staves back to wherever you want them manually. Click the staff
tool, then click the handle at the beginning of any staff you want to
move and drag it upward (or downward).

I hope something of the above helps. If not, reply with more details
either on or off the list.

Thank you very much, Karl, but both methods you describe above, didn't work.
The first method put things wrong on the first few pages (which were OK),
but with [control]-z I could undo these effects. The second was rather
difficult, but when I got the system right on one page, the systems on the
other pages too had been lifted up, so they were too high.

But finally I decided to use the page layout tool, clicked on the page
layout menu and then on reshape pages/current page, and suddenly all pages
have the systems in the same spot (which was not the case before.

But thanks for your help anyhow. Maybe my remarks are of some help to
someone else on this list
