Former Metropolitan Opera Clarinetist Sean Osborn presents the
Fifth Annual Clarinettissimo concert. The free, educationally-based
concert is presented each fall. Students and clarinet lovers are
especially encouraged to attend. The pieces, their compositional devices,
and their historical context will be spoken about before each is performed,
in a relaxed and casual atmosphere. Musician jokes may also make an
appearance.
This year the concert features all American music, with two of the
composers also performing, and guest clarinet pioneer Eric Mandat. Messrs.
Osborn and Mandat will be joined by eight other of Seattle's best
clarinettists, including Jennifer Nelson and Denise Lum of the Pacific
Northwest Ballet Orchestra, and Florie Rothenberg of the Tacoma Symphony.
The first half of the concert features Mr. Osborn and
grammy-nominated pianist Duane Hulbert in performances of Leonard
Bernstein's Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, and Aaron Copland's Clarinet
Concerto. Following the intermission Mr. Mandat and Denise Lum will join
Sean for a performance of Eric Mandat's trio One Liners - a sometimes
humorous work employing a variety of clarinet colors. Eric and Sean will
be joined next by Jennifer Nelson and David Frank for a performance of Mr.
Osborn's Quartet No. I for Four B-flat Clarinets. Then the whole group
will assemble on stage for a rare performance of Peter Schickele's
relentlessly cool Monochrome III for Nine B-flat Clarinets, which features
stereophonic effects and beautiful melodies.
Sean Osborn has traveled the US and Europe as soloist and chamber
musician, and traveled the world during his eleven years with the
Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He has also appeared as principal clarinet
with the New York Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, Seattle Symphony, and
the American Symphony Orchestra. The New York Times dubbed him "...an
excellent clarinetist," the Boston Globe called him "...a miracle."
Clarinetist/composer Eric Mandat tours extensively as a soloist
and chamber musician, presenting lectures and recitals featuring new
American clarinet music and extended performance techniques. He also
performs as part of the Chicago Symphony's new highly acclaimed
contemporary chamber music series, MusicNow, and is a member of the Tone
Road Ramblers, an eclectic sextet specializing in improvisation and
experimental music. Mandat has been equally active throughout the United
States, Europe, and Asia as a performer of more traditional clarinet
repertoire. As a composer, Mandat focuses on works for clarinet solo and in
small chamber ensembles. His compositions utilize multiphonics and
microtones within a musical framework influenced largely by jazz and
traditional music of non-Western cultures. He is Professor of Music at
Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, where he teaches clarinet and
courses in musical analysis.
Mandat will be in Seattle for a week of activities, beginning on
September 13th with a residency at Cornish College of the Arts. On
Wednesday evening, September 14th, he will appear at Jack Straw as part of
the Washington Composers' Forum's Composer Spotlight series. On Thursday
night, at Gallery 1412, Mandat will present a recital of his work, joined
by Sean Osborn.
