I have replayed the drum solo in my mind a number of times, trying to
figure out exactly why this particular performance connected with me
more than most.

One possibility is that the ensemble was not playing perfectly together,
and therefore I was forced to listen to multiple pulses, even though I
hadn't consciously recognized the problem --- until the solo finally
arrived and it seemed especially 'clear' and 'welcome' by contrast.

Another possibility relates to the message that "Mad Professor" (I hope
I remember the name correctly?) just posted about his book. Namely,
perhaps the solo stood out in my perception not because of its
'accuracy' but because of the drummer's ability to phrase and to knit
together different unpitched 'sound colors' into meaningful 'sentences'.

In the sense of phrasing, perhaps I learned a bit by listening to the
drummer.
