Subj: [kl] Orchetral sexism (was Low Eb in Brahms Symphony)
Date: Wed, 31 Aug 2005 10:54:20 -0400

Tom Henson's comparison is mixing metaphors.

Sabine Meyer had problems with the Berlin Phil. members because
they did not want a woman playing in their orchestra. Von Karijan
was a secondary problem because the players did not want Von
Karijan to make such a radical decision in the face of their
gender objections. So they got him by the colliones and squeezed
until he let Meyer go. She was an innocent victim of a
sociological and mysoginistical phenomenon. While the Berlin
orchestra has changed, the Vienna orchestra has not, at least not
to any realistic degree. I believe they have a lady harpist as a
token, but not much else.

See. Sexual issues drive male players into a sort of gender
insanity.

For the British members of the klarinet list, I am going to be on
BBC in an interview about Mozart forgiers. It is not about my
book, but about real forgeries of compositions attributed to
Mozart. The show will be on BBC4 on either Oct. 20 at 11:30 am.
And one of the many works that I will indentify as a forgery is
the Cassation Quartet as published by Southern Music company of
San Antonio.

Does BBC pay in pizzas?

I guess I'm in good company then. If I remember correctly, this
same
thing happened to Sabine Meyer, only in reverse.

Of course I am not comparing myself to her ability, but only to
her
situation that occurred in the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. So
this
kind of thing can and does happen even on the highest level it
seems.

<< This, in my limited experience, is more true the higher on
the
ladder the orchestra stands - witness the contract disputes that
erupt
in the newspapers here in U.S. cities when major (professional)
symphonies are involved.
