Depends on the group, Peter. I've done it a lot, and I wouldn't want to do
it on less than six or eight rehearsals (this is a lot here in LA, more than
most people want to give)--even with top people here. Consider--it's an hour
of great music, on a symphonic scale, with no conductor. All the parts are
important--even the horn part is bloody hard.
How much rehearsal would you want to get on the Brahms Cl. Quintet? You
could probably sight read it with people who had performed it before, but
you'd want as much as possible, right?
