The audition went very well, and yes, I did end up playing parts of the
3rd movement. I explained to the committee before I started that I would
be playing the Brahms on a Bb clarinet instead of an A and they didn't
seem to mind. It is my understanding that some community orchestras make
available transcribed parts, if they have them, to accommodate the fact
that some people don't have A and C clarinets available to them. I'm not
saying this is going to be the case if I get the position, but just the
realities of an amateur group I guess.

For a solo piece I played part of Shepherd of the Rock from the
beginning down until the vocal part starts. Given the time available, I
didn't want to play anything too long. I also played most of the
clarinet solo parts from Capriccio Espanol to satisfy their wanting to
hear something faster and knowing that they would most likely be
familiar with this piece, which they were.

Overall, I am quite pleased with how things went. The audition lasted
about 15 to 20 minutes because I was last and I guess they wanted to
talk a little to me. The person before me was in there about 10 minutes
so I figure they did not do much talking. Since this is a community
orchestra they were quite informal. No screen or anything like that. I
just sat down in front of their table and played facing them. They also
asked me some questions between pieces. I only saw one person trying to
follow along on the clarinet part for the Brahms, but the others did
not.

The audition committee was made up of four members of the woodwind
section. The principal oboist seemed to do most of the talking. After
finishing the Shepherd on the Rock, she wanted to know if I was
interested in quintet or chamber music. I was pleased that she asked
this question because I think playing in an orchestra would make it
easier to find people to make up a woodwind quintet. She told me that my
tone would blend well with hers, so I took that as a good sign. She also
wanted to talk shop about who worked on my clarinet, but I was careful
to not get too into that conversation in case I alienated the rest of
the group by not paying attention to them.

Unfortunately they told me it would be Monday (today) before they would
get back with me and have an answer if I got the position or not. Their
music director was in Greece at the time and they said he would be
returning over the weekend. So I don't know if they had more people they
were going to audition or they just wanted to wait until he returned
before making a decision and getting back to me.
