There are at least a couple of tuners in $30-40 range that do make an audible pitch thru a chromatic 8va.

I personally keeping long tone work interesting with inexpensive piano keyboard, where I can change 8vas and timbres.

Then there is the physical side that can interfere with intonation, unecessary tension that can keep us from adjusting what we can hear as wrong.
