It's an interesting point, but without access to Brahms'
manuscript, we don't have any proof of what he did, only an
editor's perspective. Now that persepctive may be right, but it
could also be wrong. A manuscript is always accurate in telling
us what the composer wrote, even if it is foolish.

I have "The Orchestra Musician's CD-ROM Library" vol. 3, which
has the
clarinet parts for all the Brahms symphonies. Both first and
second
clarinets have written low E-flats in bars 295 and 297 of the 3rd
movement.

I don't know where the publishers got their source material, but
I
presume they are accurate.

These CDs are really worth buying for any aspiring orchestral
player, as
they give you the complete parts for all the clarinets in dozens
of
works. You can buy them from Gary Van Cott at
<http://www.vcisinc.com/> (Usual disclaimer etc, just a satisfied
customer).
