Like you said, many others. Another source I checked out said he came up
with the idea and Noble nixed it so he saved the arranging style for his own
band later on. I've seen the movie too....nice story! The one I quoted
from first came out of "Trumpet Kings" by Scott Yanow and a bio on Pee Wee
Erwin. Why a trumpet book you might ask? Trumpet was my first band
instrument and now in my second childhood I'm returning to it or at least
trying.

Ding, ding ding!!! You win the grand prize. (One slightly used Rico
#1.5 reed)

This incident, as well as many others, is inaccurately depicted in the
movie, "The Glenn Movie Story." In the movie version, Miller decides to
write the lead trumpet parts for the clarinet after a lip-splitting
incident occurred to the lead trumpet player. But, when the band plays
their new arrangements (Miller had completed a re-writing of the band's
entire library in only one night!), the clarinet is clearly the lead
over the saxophones, not the brass.
