Here's a fun one:

Vibrato - A wavering tone-effect, which should be sparingly used.

Pg. 25 of the Baerman "Complete Method for Clarinet, Op. 63" edited by
Gustave Langenus.

Originally written between 1855 and 1865, although the edition I have is
hardly what I would consider a scholarly urtext. I wonder if this was in
the original, added by Langenus or added by Carl Fischer (the page has the
look of possibly being a generic terms list thrown in who knows when).

As to players (American or otherwise) being boring, well, I think that may
be in part because some spend too much time listening to other clarinet
players and not nearly enough time listening to the great string players
and vocalists.

PS: You can probably get away with more in a scholarly paper than you can
on the Klarinet list. A double edged sword, to be sure, but it certainly
makes for an interesting experience!
