Somewhere around 1980 Dr. William C. Willett, clarinetist, president
of NACWPI (National Association of College Wind and Percussion
Instructors) did a study where he compared a number of ligatures of
the day (including standard, Bonade, Bay, Kaspar, etc). As I recall,
results were done in a lab setting and he had done some type of
graphs doing a
harmonic analysis of the overtones present in each. He did a
presentation of this at an Eastern division MENC conference. I don't
know the details of the study (controls, etc) or if his results were
published anywhere. (NACWPI or education journal, Clarinet
publications, etc).
