Jacob, you should consider the possibility that overtightening a
ligature or sliding it up or down the mouthpiece has more effect on your
sound than the plating does. If you like one ligature more than
another, then you should think about these other 'details' first.

Also, it's reasonable to consider the psychological effect. Your
feelings about a certain metal (panache, richness, style, etc) probably
have a noticeable effect on how you form your embouchure, on your
posture and how you use your lungs, etc etc etc. These are
psychological issues. Perhaps you could achieve the same effect by
wearing a tuxedo (or tennis shoes from a thrift store - feel good about
yourself by supporting recycled items)?
