A local "secret" military base here in Alice Springs, which is operated in a
joint effort of Australians and Americans holds a yearly 4th of July
celebration. Our Town Band usually performs at these events, and our
concerts always began with playing the national anthems of both countries.
Looking around as we played one such concert 2 years ago, I was shocked to
notice that not a single American stood, or sung as we played the American
anthem. Being an American myself I felt embarassed and angry as I watched
them stuffing their faces and talking, never apparently noticing that our
national anthem was being played. The Australians showed far more respect
and participation. Had I known who to address a letter to I would have
certainly written a personal complaint to the base commander. These people
receive a yearly income of around $100,000.00 for conducting electronic
surveylance from around the world, a pretty cush job IMHO, and this is how
they show their respect for the country that is making them wealthy!
