Dan, I'm not sure where you're headed with this - perhaps satirical? -
but don't you think that, overall , audiences are more likely to be
discourteous than performers are?

I can remember only one time when a performer was rude during a concert
that I attended, and I can remember lots of times when the person
sitting next to me was an inconsiderate boor. (Perhaps 6 months ago, a
virtuoso pianist frowned and stood up from the piano for a few moments
and stared the audience down because of audience coughing. It seemed
like everyone in town had the flu at that moment, and what the heck are
you going to do if you've paid $65 for a ticket months ago? It might
be different if less money were involved or if you could trade the
ticket in for a 'raincheck' or some such thing. The local newspaper
praised the pianist's performance, but condemned his self-righteous
attitude.)

But all told, don't you think that performers want to please and it's
the audiences who are more likely to misbehave as if they are owed
obeisance (albeit I don't feel this way about most audiences, which is
why the occasional bad one stands out)?
