To what extent (if at all?) can it be said that changes in the rules of
'proper' applause have encouraged changes in the music?

For example, did Romantic music emphasize stronger connections between
movements, arias, and across GPs, including more interplay of themes
without repeating the themes during each segment, because the audience
cold sustain their attention and 'aural memories' uninterrupted for
longer stretches --- thereby inviting such connections and interplays
from composers? Or perhaps vice versa, composers instigated the
changes with their music?

I notice that, with the exception of applause during a finale GP, nobody
has stated that applause in midstream has bothered them. Is this
because, in fact, it never has?
