I agree with Dan as well - you know, people pay the hard-earned to do
something they ENJOY, and not, unless they are wrestling with
personality problems that are beyond the scope of this discussion, to
be put in a position where they're constantly thinking "Now, which
fork goes with which entree?", even after becoming relatively well
educated. Hell, I PLAY in an orchestra, and I've been "guilty" of
applauding at a point where, oops, the music isn't over. Unless you're
familiar with a work, you can get turned around by attaca transitions
and grand pauses within movements. I've gotten to where I don't
applaud until a) the conductor turns around or b) the rest of the
audience applauds. I think the thing about applause is part of the
overall constipation I see within some of the academic set - while
certainly one's approach to performing should be serious, i.e. with an
eye toward excellence, a lot of this music wasn't written to be such a
deadly serious experience for the concert-goer! I mean, if you've
studied the plots of these operas, well, my gawd...
