Yesterday I happened to hear an NPR program ("Infinite Mind", or similar
title) in which a group of psychologists & neurologists & composers &
authors discussed "writer's block".

One of them made the statement that her personal preferences demand that
she not understand why she likes a piece of music or story that she is
writing. When she understands it, she often gets writer's block
because there seems (to her) to be no point in continuing any further.

She explained other causes for her writer's block episodes (especially
unsympathetic editors and agents), but it interested me that she echoed
Karl's original question of "Why do you want to understand your own
preferences?" Yet I usually feel, as a different person, the opposite
way. I'm usually uncomfortable when I don't understand.

....interesting... one size does not fit all.
